Details

I worked with artist Jennifer Wen Ma to redesign her website. The previous site, built over a decade ago, no longer reflects the scope or maturity of her work. Our new design prioritizes clarity, searchability, and visual simplicity to let her artworks take center stage while aligning with her artistic and contemporary aesthetic voice. The website serves as both a professional archive and a public-facing portfolio, making it easier for visitors to explore, search, and engage with her extensive body of work

The Problem

Outdated web experience → design was created back in 2000s

Unstructured archive of 200+ works → hard for curators to navigate

How might we design a simple site that showcases the artist’s work while transforming the archive into a digital library that helps curators discover and explore her collection?

I designed an intuitive finder

Making searches feel familiar

I designed a tag-based filtering system where users can browse artworks by selecting medium, location, and date to reveal matching results, making it easier for curators and art professionals to find relevant works quickly and intuitively.

The interaction design works like a physical filing systems, reinforcing the logic of an organized archive. The self-curation experience is much like flipping through tabbed folders, records in a library, or one could even say a museum.

Reimagining the site End-to-End

While the search experience was the main focus, I also reimagined key pages that shape how visitors explore the artist’s work. Each page was redesigned to better reflect the artist’s voice, simplify navigation, and create a cohesive visual language across the site.
